New National Theatre Tokyo – July 2023
12 opera scenes ranging from Gluck’s Orfeo through Bellini Capuleti, Donizetti L’elisir d’amore and Thomas Hamlet to Cilea Adriana Lecouvreur, Poulenc Carmélites and Adams Nixon in China. The brief was to reuse existing scenery and by placing two panels on a revolving turntable I was able to create twelve different settings, some of which were “backstage” and others in front of the panels. A black iris effect upstage changed the backdrop for each scene. The lighting designer was KAWAGUCHI Masahiro, costumes by MASUDA Emi, sound design by KAWARADA Kenji and the stage manager was SAITO Cibita.
